Hobbies
I have many hobbies and I thought that when I have the time, I might begin describing them here.
I enjoy sculpting and carving, and in particular, I derive a great deal of pleasure creating these large three-dimensional wall hangings for my children and friends. They are first carved out of foam to ensure that they are lightweight, and then this foam carving is covered in epoxy resin. This forms a very hard and durable surface, similar to a surfboard. I have in mind an open-mouthed hippo to cover a laundry chute. The children can throw their dirty clothes into the hippo's mouth.
This first image gives you an idea of the scale of these pieces. They are really fun to build and the kids love them!
African elephant
This African elephant is on the wall in the children's room. They use the tusks to hang things off of!
African elephant again
Frontal view of the same elephant. It is flat on the far side because it lies up against the wall.
Black rhinoceros
This black rhino was one of the first animals that I made this way. Before this we had made our pieces out of paper-mache, but found that they didn't last long and weren't worth the effort.
As in the elephant's tusks, I find that people love to hang things off of the ears and horn of this rhino.
